After his release from prison, mob boss Dwight “The General” Manfredi is exiled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he builds a new criminal empire with a cast of unlikely characters. Sylvester Stallone’s first starring role in a television series. Dwight “The General” Manfredi: I really don’t go to church. The opening credits sequence shows various photographic and painted views and landmarks of Oklahoma imposed on the New York City landscape: A statue of Sioux Indian chief “Touch the Clouds” wearing a war bonnet and a bone choker (breastplate) imposed on top of the Brooklyn BridgeThe Golden Driller statue imposed on the Statue of LibertyRoute 66 Western Gateway Arch imposed on a major “avenue” in Manhattan.
Featured in CBS News Sunday Morning: Episode #457 (2022)
In New York City, in the borough of Manhattan, there are several numbered “avenues” that are intersected by smaller numbered streets. I watched this out of curiosity, without much expectation, I was just surprised to see Stallone in a TV series. You can feel the tension in the scenes, it also seems pretty realistic to the extent that the plot would require. I wouldn’t say it’s humorous but there are some funny scenes due to the fact that Dwight (Stallone) is coming off a 25 year prison sentence and isn’t fully integrated into the way the world works now; so I guess the abrupt transition will provide some interesting hiccups for us in the future.
It’s a pretty clever script but not in a witty, energetic way, which bodes well
I’m glad someone told him how to use an Uber, it was funny while it lasted. Sure, Stallone is a huge presence, but the rest of the cast seems pretty good. The show literally feels like you took gangsters written for an early 90s movie and just threw them into 2022, which is a nice mix of humor and violence. I thought it would just be a throwaway show like some of Stallone’s recent movies are; I’m going mostly on his name and performances, but Taylor Sheridan does a good job here with writing worthy of Stallone’s performances.
If it keeps up like this, great, if it gets better, it’ll be fantastic
I think it’s going to be fun to watch the macho Stallone build a criminal empire from the ground up in the middle of nowhere Tulsa. I like how it has that oatmeal western feel at times while still being about the mob. I think the show could end up flying under the radar and then building buzz later with people wondering how they never discovered it sooner, since I haven’t seen much publicity from Paramount. I didn’t have high expectations, but based on the first episode, this could be a really fun show.
I’ll add a rating after more episodes are released and update if anything changes drastically in the series
