Cillian Murphy is a fan of the film’s original novel author, Claire Keegan
In 1985, devoted Father Bill Furlong uncovers disturbing secrets kept by a local monastery and uncovers his own shocking truths. He remembers reading her novel “Foster” on a train and having to pull his hood over his face because he was crying..
Just a glimpse into the harsh reality of the Magdalene laundries in Ireland
Eileen Furlong: If you want to get on in this life, there are things you have to ignore.. Featured on 60 Minutes: The Red Sea Crisis / Fake Voters / The Search for Cillian Murphy (2024).
Bill is a working-class Irishman
He is married to Eileen and they have 5 girls at home. Bill works in a coal depot, delivering coal to various people.
Bills dread follows him until Christmas as we see his past as we piece together why he is so distraught
Bill heads to a convent where he becomes distraught and after more deliveries he becomes more concerned about the nuns goings on. I think the film is an important watch, I thought it would have been more focused on the convent side of things and the atrocities that happened but this was Bills story.
Good watch, beautiful performances, 7/10
I felt a pang in my chest throughout the film, wanting him to say something, to do something but I also knew the consequences he and his entire family would suffer if they dared to question the church. The fact that these hellholes were open until 1998 is a disgrace and an embarrassment to this country and the church seeing the power that nuns and priests believe they are entitled to is infuriating.
