Raina’s life is threatened after she opens the door and enters an unnumbered room in a hotel run by her sister Fey. The figure of a woman with white hair and skin also makes her presence known. Taken from a true story about a haunted hotel in Semarang with the initial “S”.
Writer Riheam Junianti has crafted a fairly fair script
Having never heard of this 2023 Indonesian supernatural horror film titled “Panggonan Wingit”; (aka “The Haunted Hotel”), I sat down to watch it in 2024 because I had the chance. And given my lifelong love of the horror genre and Asian films, of course, I didn’t need much convincing to sit down and watch this film. It was definitely entertaining, but at the same time, writer Riheam Junianti indulged in a lot of stereotypical horror tropes, which kind of made certain aspects of “Panggonan Wingit” a bit mundane and generic.
I will say that the acting in the movie was good though
I’m not saying it’s a bad movie, far from it, because I really enjoyed the storyline, and I’m sure that newcomers to the horror genre will enjoy this movie. However, as a lifelong horror fan, I found the movie good but unimpressive. Considering that I’ve only been to Indonesian cinema for a short time, I was only familiar with the lead actress in this movie, Luna Maya.
I liked the special effects, props, sets and wardrobe in the film
Actor Egy Fedly, who plays the spiritualist Ki Danang, really nailed his role as he gave a pretty memorable and convincing performance. “Panggonan Wingit” has a fair amount of blood and visual mayhem, but it’s not over the top. So director Guntur Soeharjanto has managed to take what was used sparingly and make something good out of it.
It falls into the five stars out of ten
A film that runs for 110 minutes could have benefited from a more polished editing room. It’s worth sitting down and watching if you’re into horror and Asian genre, of course. But it’s hardly a film you need to watch more than once.
