MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy-drama that follows the journey of Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army veteran in Afghanistan who finds herself at odds with her family thanks to the presence of Zoe (Natalie Morales), her deceased best friend from the Army. Despite the persistence of her veterans’ group counselor (Morgan Freeman), the fierce love of her mother (Gloria Ruben), and the frivolity of an unexpected love interest, Merit’s cozy, dysfunctional friendship with Zoe keeps the duo isolated from the world. That is, until Merit’s estranged grandfather (Ed Harris), holed up in the family’s ancestral lake house, begins to drift and needs the one thing he’s been denied… help. At its core, it’s a buddy movie about complicated friendships, a divided family, and the complicated ways we deal with grief.
