Bailey seeks attention and adventure elsewhere
Line of Events
Bailey lives with his brother Hunter and his father Bug, who is raising them alone in a squat in north Kent. Bogar doesn’t have much time for them. Barry Keoghan dropped out of Gladiator II (2024) to appear in this film instead.

The Bird may seem like a big step for Andrea Arnold, as she experimentally moves away from her usual gritty and resolutely naturalistic territory and into the realm of magical realism. But ironically, much of the runtime is spent on well-trodden ground. There are some enjoyable bits, particularly the remarkable debut of lead character Nykiya Adams, whose confidence is thrilling to watch.
But Bird feels aimless for much of its runtime
It’s gorgeous and vibrant in 16mm, provided you can handle the absolutely wild movements of the handheld camera. Composed mainly of modern British rock and punk, the soundtrack is refreshingly different. There’s good humour and an often light-hearted tone – kids are kids sometimes, amid the inevitable trials of growing up too fast.
It lacks fantastical characters and plot
Many scenes and plots are worthless in themselves, feeling like they were building up to something explosive that, in my opinion, ultimately didn’t happen. Its setting is both strangely fantastical and painfully real, in a way that disrupts the tone. It feels authentic to the director’s experiences (set firmly in his childhood neighbourhood of Kent) and it reinforces the sense that Arnold is telling a very personal story that matters far more to him than it does to the audience.
