Shown in The 7PM Project: Episode 5 December 2024 (2024)
A unique profile of British pop star Robbie Williams. The film emerged from several recordings of interviews that director Michael Gracie made with Robbie Williams over the course of a year and a half at Williams’ recording studio in Los Angeles, United States. Although the interviews were not originally intended for the film, as Gracie “just wanted to capture [Williams] in his own voice telling his story”, most of Williams’ voiceover in the film was taken from these recordings. Robbie Williams: If you’re going to laugh, just do it from the inside, okay?
This movie is not what I expected
In a biographical film about Robbie Williams, one would expect color, theatricality, music and dance, and this film does not disappoint with its spectacularity. But where smaller biopics take you on a journey through the hits of an artist, this film takes you on a journey through the psyche of Robbie Williams as he tries to come to terms with the fact that he’s got everything he’s ever wanted but feels like he’s got everything still not enough. The film moves at a dizzying speed, and there are very few moments when the film stops to rest, however, it is a credit to Michael Gracie and his team that the film still packs a powerful emotional punch. Jonno Davis is fantastic as Robbie, capturing his movements and features perfectly.
The film benefits greatly from being an independent film
The Weta team also deserves praise for their incredible work on transforming his game into a chimpanzee, which symbolizes how Robbie sees himself (an ape-actor, less developed than those around him). Rachel Banno plays Nicole Appleton (from All Saints) and gives an emotional performance as Robbie’s fiancee. Her dance performance and the montage of their meeting are indeed some of the highlights of the film. Steve Pemberton is perfect as Robbie’s father, the man who made him who he is, in the worst possible way.
His singing and voice acting were also exceptional
It seems that the story that Michael Gracie really wanted to tell. Sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll laid bare in all their grotesque glory. Robbie Williams himself also deserves a lot of praise for allowing the film to lay all its flaws and mistakes at the feet of the audience. He doesn’t look very good in large parts of the film, and the film is strengthened by his honesty with the audience.
I hope he achieves the success he deserves
This film is pompous and obvious almost the whole time, but like the person it captures, it has a sensitive soul right underneath all that bravado. This is the best film of the year, a visual and auditory feast.
